Pulsed-LED Testing Module

  • Gamma Scientific has had the pleasure of working with the medical industry in measuring LEDs involved with pulsed-LED oximetry for determining blood-oxygen levels in tissue, as well as pulse rates. One of the challenges in oximetry is flux estimation, which requires sufficient measurement frequency and signal response. This means the sensor must be fast and the pulse must reach sufficient intensities in the given interval.
  • As you can imagine, this requires precise analysis on the medical instrument however characterizing LEDs in a pulsing operating requires a great deal of thought.  Our test module has tacked the most challenging of the issues for testing: proper synchronization of timing between LED output and measurement intervals using Gamma Scientific GS-1220 series RadOMAs.  This instrument, coupled with our custom external trigger control circuit, allows analysis of LED pulses consistently from 10 µs to 4 ms.
  • Originally designed for production applications, our module control software allows for customized recipes for testing each LED at multiple drive levels, currents, or integration times. Batches of LEDs can be tested together and labelled with optional barcode scanning for organization and the results can be binned and logged together in a batch matrix which reflects the recipe being executed.  The culmination of these features and instruments allows a full characterization of the LED such that the sensor can be designed for responsivity about that performance.
  • The highest level of this module series includes compatibility with the TEC and rise-time modules such that one system can test all 3 properties on 1 LED at a time. Being able to realize how a pulsed LED response to changes in the environment and how well that same LED response to different pulse lengths is critical for development of a successful product.
