Optical Scientist

This position is for a creative Optical Scientist to assist with optical laboratory setup and measurements. The Optical Scientist must be able to work closely with other engineers and team members in order to solve complex problems and meet deadlines. Since Gamma Scientific is a small fast-growing company, the Optical Scientist should possess good multi-tasking skills and be a versatile problem solver. The Optical Scientist will report to the Director of Engineering.


  • Hands-on experience performing delicate opto-mechanical alignment
  • Experience using optical test equipment (scientific cameras, spectrometers, photometers, etc.)
  • Experience using electronic test equipment (DMMs, signal generators, Oscilloscopes, etc.)
  • Knowledge of ESD guidelines for handling electronics, experience with soldering/rework of PCB assemblies
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with DC and AC wiring and troubleshooting
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Optics, Physics, or other Engineering discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience working in an optical laboratory environment is required
  • Strong background in Engineering and Physics is required
  • Experience with light measurement equipment, electronic laboratory equipment, or commercial display equipment is required
  • Basic knowledge in the fundamentals of spectroradiometer, photometry and colorimetry are desired
  • General PC skills in Windows environment including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimum supervision
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Design optical experiments with minimal guidance
  • Layout and build laboratory setup for various optical measurements
  • Intuitively use a variety of opto-mechanical components; including micrometer stages, lenses, optical mounts, optical rails, cameras, irises/apertures, fibers, polarizers, lasers, optical breadboards, etc.
  • Configure hardware and software with relevant parameters for data collection
  • Design, code, and run software scripts in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW (or other languages such as C, C++, C#, assembly language)
  • Process complex datasets in MATLAB or Excel, and provide intelligent analysis and analytical breakdown
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging complex optical systems based on dataset or other indicators
  • Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using sound problem solving techniques
  • Estimate level of effort, evaluate new options of similar technology, offer suggestions to improve processes, and provide comments on some electrical design aspects
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with other Gamma Scientific associates in cross functional teams to achieve goals
  • Apply a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
  • Travel to assist with hardware implementation and system integration in the field
  • Perform other duties as necessary
